From Anderson: In its twenty books it deals with shipbuilding, organisation, history, navigation and many kindred subjects. Book I is concerned with shipbuilding, Book ii with dockyards, Book iii with the duties of officers, Book xvii with the mechanical contrivances used on board, Book xvill with the question of a ship's displacement. As an introduction there is a long vocabulary of technical terms. The author goes very thoroughly into the methods of drawing a ship's lines and into the relative proportions of her various parts. He describes her rigging at length, mentions and describes many types of vessels and gives a detailed account of the French Couronne built in 1638. It is a large book, the page of type being some 11 inches high and it has 964 pages. The second edition of 1667 is the same size but has only 728 pages, twelve to a sheet. Roding mentions another editon of 1679.
